Course Description
English 101 is a writing intensive course designed to introduce you to the methods of academic research and critical writing. You will read and analyze college level materials, learn to incorporate those materials into your own writing, and compose expository essays that demonstrate an understanding of rhetorical strategies and critical thinking skills. You will progress from learning active reading strategies through finding, evaluating, and citing research materials to finally writing focused arguments supported with sound evidence and clear reasoning.
Students will gain an understanding of the following forms of academic writing:
- Literary Analysis
- Argument Evaluation
- Annotated Bibliography
- Research-based Argument Essay
Course Objectives
By the end of the course, students will be able to:
- Analyze the rhetorical situation of college-level texts and explain its influence on the content
- Locate research materials using a library’s catalog, online databases, and other scholarly repositories on the internet
Evaluate the quality and accuracy of research materials and determine if they are acceptable for academic essays - Quote and paraphrase research material appropriately using MLA style guidelines
- Plan and write a research-based argument that uses an array of diverse sources to support a clear thesis
- Collaborate with others and provide constructive feedback on content and writing style
- Revise an essay through multiple drafts to improve its clarity, organization, and persuasiveness
